Afora, dentro

In December 2019, I decided to publish a collection of linked stories in Portuguese with Editora Labrador in Brazil called Afora, Adentro. It narrates the life of eight individuals in eight different Portuguese-speaking countries. Each of the eight stories play with what it means to be an outsider and a local, with characters traveling in and out of each other’s respective countries. I also did not structure the narrative as eight separate stories, but as a chain of language, in which one narrator stops speaking and another immediately begins. I wanted to explore the diversity of language and culture in the Lusophone countries. I wanted to show that though the geography and mentality makes people worlds apart, there are languages, like Portuguese, which somehow keep them in one linguistic world.
