In September 2019, I published a book of poems 客然恼说 (Kiran Speaks) with White Elephant Press in Taiwan. During my 9 months as an Indian culture and English teacher at a small university in Shanghai, I found myself enraptured by the Chinese language, and suddenly, on a weekend trip to Tianjin, I found lines of poetry coming to myself in the language. I wanted to reflect on life, love, on relationships between people, on the nature of humanity, and the self. The structure of the language came in Bhakti style of 16th century India, but the rhetoric style became a dialectic, much akin to the way Confucius poses questions and responds in his writings. I ended up writing 25 poems in this style, creating a unique project framed inside of a Hindu and Confucian cultural polyphony.
